Prestwood Nature The Local Environment Group for the Prestwood Area

Devil's BoleteThe larger fungi, especially the toadstools (basidiomycetes), have been extensively recorded, with 398 species, to which can be added 31 ascomycetes (such as morels and truffles), 24 urediniomycetes (rusts) and 27 other microfungi.  All the older woodlands, whether on clay or chalk, are productive (eg Angling Spring, Peterley and Lodge Woods), while there are also a few survivals of old grassland where waxcaps and other indicator species, such as the club fungi, can be found (especially the churchyards at Prestwood and Great Hampden, Great Kingshill Common, Great Hampden Common).  Woodlands in a good autumn can yield such impressive examples as Fly Agaric, Snakeskin Grisette, Death Cap, Panthercap (all Amanita species); many rare boletes (Boletus), including Devil’s Bolete, Oak Bolete, Parasitic Bolete, Inkstain Bolete, and Boletus xanthocyaneus; Horn of Plenty; Lacquered andPink Waxcap Artist’s Brackets; Goat Moth Waxcap; Larch Woodwax; many Milkcaps, including several rare hornbeam associates; Spiny Puffball; Semifree Morel; White Saddle; many Brittlegills (Russula), especially with beech, birch and oak; Summer Truffle; and the seriously shaggy “Old Man of the Woods”.

Many are unpredictable and only appear in occasional years, especially old man of the woods, which can fail to appear for ten years or more at a time.  The pride of the old grasslands are the brightly colourful Waxcaps (Hygrocybe), of which 22 different species have been recorded, 16 of them in Prestwood churchyard, including the celebrated Pink Waxcap.
